Mountain Bike Drivetrain

The drivetrain is the heart of your mountain bike. It takes your pedaling input and turns it into forward motion, and when it's running smooth it makes everything feel better on the trail. A modern MTB drivetrain is a lot of individual parts that all need to work together: the crankset, chainring, chain, cassette, rear derailleur, bottom bracket, and a chainguide to keep everything in line. If any one of those pieces is worn out or mismatched, you'll feel it. The good news is we stock all of it.

SRAM vs Shimano

The two dominant brands are SRAM and Shimano, and both make a full range from budget-friendly to race-level. SRAM's Eagle lineup covers 12-speed across NX, GX, X01, and XX1, plus their wireless AXS and T-Type Transmission systems. We did a full SRAM Eagle groupset comparison if you want to know exactly what you get at each price point. Shimano runs XTR, XT, SLX, and Deore for mountain bikes -- we broke those down in detail too -- plus their Di2 wireless system. Not sure which brand to go with? We've covered the SRAM vs Shimano debate in depth.

Aftermarket and Individual Components

Beyond SRAM and Shimano, we carry aftermarket specialists for every part of the drivetrain. RaceFace, Wolf Tooth, Absolute Black, and OneUp Components are the go-to brands for aftermarket chainrings -- round, oval, and direct mount options for every crank system. For bottom brackets, Wheels Manufacturing and CeramicSpeed are the two brands we recommend most. Bottom brackets are one of the most confusing parts of a drivetrain build -- this guide on picking the right bottom bracket and this install walkthrough will sort you out.
