Whether you are a strong rider or not, having another climbing gear is always welcome. One major upgrade or replacement is the cassette. If you are running a worn cassette it can make any bike feel terrible. Our friend Danny shares his experience with the SRAM XG-1150 10-42T 11 speed cassette. Check it out!
After 1,400 trail miles last year, my cassette was fairly well shredded. Was not diligent enough with my chain replacement apparently. However, I was able to get a replacement cassette quickly and fairly inexpensively via WorldWide Cyclery (WWC). It was easy to find the right part (and other compatible options) and my drive train was much happier after the switch. So far (~200 miles), the cassette is working much better than my spent one. I would definitely recommend a chain gauge and keeping an eye out and more frequent monitoring as my laziness in this area certainly reduced the life of the previous cassette. Hoping to treat this one a little better so that it makes it further.
Just about the time I was about to pull the trigger on purchasing, I thought of my cross-bike which is used for the random road, light trail rides, or for commuting/getting around town. The old cassette had about 4000 miles on it and it was time. The SRAM cassette once again was easily found within a few minutes on WWC's site and very inexpensive. What a world of difference, why did I ever put up with a sloppy drivetrain?
Now both bikes are rolling a little more smoothly. Less frustration at skipping/poor shifting and more peace of mind knowing solid components are in place. This is especially important to me on remote rides in the backcountry where I am unlikely to encounter anyone and the trailhead is 15-20 miles away. Definitely no fun hiking back in the dark due to worn components.
