Winter is in full swing and for most of the country, that means short days with more darkness than sunlight it seems for a few weeks. However, it's not all that bad. If you have never tried night riding then you are missing out. Especially with the right equipment, it can add a whole new level of excitement. In this rider review, we shed a little light on a popular setup many riders enjoy.
I’m really liking my new night riding set up with a Niterider Lumina 850 on the bars and one mounted on top of my helmet. The adjustability is great. I'm able to get just the right angle on the beam and multiple brightness settings make it perfect for adjusting the brightness. I typically run them both on the medium setting for longer rides and high for short rides. I really like the style of the bar mount clamp on this light compared to the rubber band style from the older version. It makes it super easy to put it on and off the bike and provides plenty of strength to keep the clamp from twisting.
The helmet mount was easy enough to install. However, finding the best place to mount it on my helmet was a bit of a challenge since my helmet has grooves all the way across the top of the outer shell. Once I got it centered and pressed down firmly I realized how much I underestimated the strength of the adhesive. The compact setup makes for a lightweight headlamp with no fuss.
My only issue so far is that the lights are said to last 1.5hrs at full strength, but the lights dim noticeably after about an hour of riding, especially in sub-freezing temperatures. Overall I’m happy with the purchase and would recommend them to anyone looking to get into night riding.
