Mountain biking is an inherently dangerous sport. Therefore, you should always consider protection to keep yourself safe from injury. There are several brands and types of guards out there for just about every part of your body. Fellow rider, Justin McKinney, recently bought G-Form knee pads and gives us his review below.
I wanted to wait to write a review until I finally had a crash so that I could speak on the protection level of these guards. First off, the fit of these guards are very good but you need to do your homework and get the fit guide information so you know which size of guards you need to order. I am 6 foot tall and weigh 160 pounds but yet I fit in the small guards. The fit is also meant to be on bare skin. Meaning that if you want guards to go over your base layers, etc these are not the guards for you.
The guards have bands at the top and bottom that are kind of gummy and when you are a little sweaty, they stick very very well. You won’t have any trouble with these guards falling down or riding up on you as you pedal. Until you get a little sweaty, you might have a little of the guards falling down but it is still very minimal. You could get around the sweaty thing if you just wet your skin lightly with your riding water and then you wouldn’t have to wait until you started to get sweaty. I'm including a photo that shows the gummy band of the guards.
The guards are very flexible and do not hinder your body movements at all. They are also quite breathable but you are wearing something on your body and you should not expect them to be as airy as not wearing any guards at all. I live in Arizona and use these guards even in the summer months and have been very happy with them.
As far as the protection level is concerned, they did very well in keeping me from getting injured at all when I finally had a crash. The only area on my leg that got injured (scraped) was the area just above the guards. Where the guards were located, my skin and everything under the skin was just fine.
The guards are machine washable on cold/gentle cycle and I let them air dry and they are holding up very well and smell great!
In summary, G-Form Pro-X Knee-Shin Guards are a great purchase if you are looking for a great fit, stay put, flexible and breathable and top-level protection.
