Overview

I upgraded my 2018 Stumpjumper’s shock to the Fox Float DPX2 for two main reasons—progression adjustability and the tuning capabilities. I’m a heavier rider at 6-1 and 225 lbs and can really benefit from a highly adjustable shock. (BTW, to upgrade, I also installed a Bike Yoke SJ02, WWC #YB-5031).

Progression

The Fox Float DPX2 Rear Shock is easy to add volume spacers (sold separately). Most times, with a firm grip, you can unscrew the air can by hand, snap in your preferred spacer, and hand screw back on the air can. You don’t have to remove the shock to add spacers. It’s easy and I’m currently running the “medium blue”, which is the biggest and thus most progressive. Fox makes this very easy to figure out with a chart published here:

Adjustability

The Fox Float DPX2 is easy to tune and performs awesome after doing so. I think riders, in general, don’t tune their shocks because all the settings are intimidating, but Fox makes it really easy with a tuning guide. Depending on the stroke length, you know your exact sag target and your starting pressure is your rider weight (work up from there). Once you fine-tune your pressure and hit your sag target, Fox provides a rebound setting estimate, given your actual pressure (I set mine at 2). At this point, you have sag and rebound tuned! On the trail, the 3 position lever works great and I found that I really liked the “medium” setting for XC mostly flat, XC trails. After a few rides, if you bottom out the shock, step up to a larger volume spacer and re-tune.

Other Quick Tips

If you are upgrading, this is a bigger shock--make sure your water bottle still fits. Also, keep a rag under the shock when changing the volume spacer--a little oil will drip.

Final Thoughts

I am 100% satisfied with this shock and the upgrade was well worth it.
