With bottom brackets getting lower and lower, not only is hitting your cranks becoming a common issue, so is hitting your chainring. We highly recommend running a bash guard/chain guide on any modern enduro bike. Our friend, Lane has been running the MRP Chain guide. See what they think of it!
I purchased this chain guide bash guard combo unit after dropping my chain in the middle of an XC race earlier this year. I had an MRP bash guard on at the time, but that only protects the bottom of the chain ring. I was running a fairly tight X01 chain and drivetrain but since I had never dropped a chain before this event, I didn’t think I would need it. Apparently, I was shredding harder and faster than my time trial runs and never thought this would be an issue on an XC race. Wrong!! After dropping off of a downhill feature and ripping through a berm, my chain fell off but I still didn’t know it. I cranked through the berm super hard and quickly realized that it dropped. When I looked down I was super pissed to see that I had locked it up tight between my frame and the inside of my chain ring. Once I got it loosened up and back on I saw the worst part - I scratched a nice circle into my carbon cc frame. That is not the time to think about saving a few dollars that I should have spent on the combo bash guard chain guide in the first place! Needless to say, I removed it when I returned home from the race, gave it to my son, and ordered the combo.
The AMg combines a lightweight upper guide and a durable integrated bash guard. Unlike the cheap, flexy, and rattle-prone upper guides found on competitors’ products, the AMg features a premium, stiff, and silent co-molded “TR” upper guide. It is coupled with a super-tough, fiber-infused bash guard. It fits rings from 26-32t.
The AMg will give you the confidence to ride new lines.
I bought the carbon version, simply because the alloy was out of stock. Now that I have it, I have to say it looks super dope on my bike! Plus it completely hides the nasty scratch ring on the inside of my frame. It’s very quiet and super easy to install. I chose this one over the fully enclosed ring because I did not want to remove and replace my crank arm after installing it. This simply slides on under the chain ring and on top of the chain. It comes with bolts and quite a few different washers that you will need to use to ensure the fit is just right. I recommend applying some high-quality bike lube (from Worldwide Cyclery, of course!) on the bolts before you install it. It looks great and protects your chain ring, giving you added peace of mind. It’s a bit pricey but super cheap compared to other mountain bike upgrades and components.
The bottom line is that it eliminates dropped chains and protects your expensive drivetrain and pricey frame! It is a great product and a super investment to protect the most important component on your mountain bike!! Thanks to the folks Worldwide Cyclery for carrying this product and MRP for developing a high-quality solution to an issue that you don’t think about until it happens.
