The age old mountain bike question has always been which tire combo is the best. With an infinite number of combos you can run it can get a bit confusing. Our friend Grant shares his thoughts on the Maxxis Minion DHF and DHRII tire combo. Check it out!
My Maxxis DHF and DHRII are my new tires I just got from Worldwide Cyclery. My old tires were Maxxis Rekons with tan walls and they didn't have quite enough traction for my riding. I ride rough enduro trails in the Asheville area on a 160mm hardtail. So my back tire would be sliding around the place a lot of the time so I decided that these tires would be perfect for my riding style. I knew what tires I needed to buy I just needed to find a place to buy them and I buy mountain bike products and components from world wide cyclery all the time. I ordered them and they got here quickly when I put them on I liked the look better than my old tan wall Rekon tires. It made my bike look stealth and over all just a better look in my taste.
My first ride on them was a huge difference and I could tell immediately my purchase of these tires was worth it.
They were really really really really grippy and I found myself being able to grab into the corners way better than I have been able before. The nobs were grabbing on the dry dust and into the muddier sections. The mud also did not stick to my tires as easily to the DHF and the DHRII than it did to my Rekons. The difference showed in climbing too. I was able to climb up more sketchy terrain and not slip and slide all over the place. I am cleaning techy climbs that I never have. The only place we're the tires travel slower is on the road but who ride mountain bikes in roads so that won't affect anyone who buys these.
The Maxxis DHF and DHRII do way a bit more over the Rekons and I could tell when holding the wheel but not really when picking up the bike and definitely not when riding it. The tires gave me more grip going around corners on gravel roads and made it less sketchy. Where I ride you have to ride down gravel roads a lot of the time. When I road with these tires through the wet for the first time I could immediately feel the gain in traction over the Rekons that would slide all over the place when going up hill and down hill. When someone says just to run the DHF they mean it because it's a great tire. I ran a DHF on the front of my first bike and it made a huge difference there too.
Since I ride a hardtail the 2.8 tires make a big difference in taking out the bumps in the trail and all the small vibrations in the trail. I would recommend these tires to anyone who would buy them.
