In this review, our customer Stephen Harmon breaks down his Maxxis Ikon 29" x 2.35" 120tpi tires. Stephen says it would be hard to find a tire that is more impressive for its particular cross country application. Read more below!
I recently purchased a set of 29" x 2.35" 120tpi Maxxis Ikon tires from Worldwide Cyclery because #1) Worldwide Cyclery ROCKS, and #2) because I run a 2.8" Ikon/Rekon combination on my 27.5+ size wheelset and love the Ikon as a rear tire. I decided to use Ikons front and back on my XC hardtail (Pivot LES) because I don't require very aggressive tread on that bike. If you will be riding in overly slippery/wet/rocky/rooted conditions, you may want to consider the Rekon on the front.
I love these tires for my particular application. They are extremely lightweight and despite their 120tpi casing, I've found them to be very durable and resistant to sidewall cuts. I run a Minion DHF/DHR combination on my Firebird but those would be too aggressive for my hardtail (love those too, though).
At the end of the day, it all boils down to what you're trying to accomplish because there is no perfect tire for every application (much like there is no perfect bike for every type of riding). I will say this though, I feel you'll be hard-pressed to find a more impressive, lightweight, faster, more durable XC tire than the Maxxis Ikon 29 x 2.35 120tpi tire.
