Your bike can be as dialed in as possible but if you don't have a good set of tires on your mountain bike all those adjustments go out the window. Our friend Andrew shares his experience with the Maxxis Assegai 29 x 2.50 Tubeless 3C Maxx Grip DD Wide Trail tire. Check it out!
After going through several Maxxis Assegai, it has become my favorite front tire. The grip provided is on another level compared to other tires I have used. The 3c Maxx Grip compound is extremely soft, and bites in all conditions. I have ridden this Maxxis Assegai Tire 29 x 2.50 Tubeless 3C Maxx Grip DD Wide Trail tire in mud, hardpack, and thick dust and have not found any condition that the tire fails in. While it does have a crazy amount of grip, on flatter trails, the rolling resistance can be felt. For this reason, I feel like it is best suited as a front only tire with a faster rolling rear except for extremely steep trails.
The casing on the Double Down Assegai tire is also another one of the best I have used. The casings are noticeably more rigid than most tires which allows you to run lower pressures as well as, more importantly, prevent flats. Having used both the Double Down and downhill casing of this tire, the double down is only slightly thinner, while retaining most sidewall stiffness while also reducing weight slightly. This is nice when using it as a front tire as puncture protection is less important than when used on the rear.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this tire for anyone who wants an exceptionally grippy tire that works no matter the season.
