Here in this review, one of our customers Evan Patten goes for a new tire setup with a Maxxis Minion DHF up front and a Maxxis Aggressor 2.5" Wide Trail tire in the rear. This is the same tire combo that Enduro World Series champion Richie Rude runs on his Yeti SB5.5 race bike. Read more below!
As my rear Schwalbe Hans Dampf wore down for the second time, I decided I needed something different. After a little research, I decided to go with the Maxxis Aggressor in the fairly fresh 2.5" WT width along with a trusty Maxxis DHF 2.5" WT up front. I ordered my tires along with a few other things and, as usual, Worldwide Cyclery had them quickly to my doorstep in 3 days. I got my package and all was there, as usual again.
This was my first time setting up tubeless. So there was a learning curve, but I will say that even for my first time the bead seated easily with an air compressor and made the job painless. They held air without leaking even before sealant. I have the Aggressor Wide Trail mounted on a 27mm width wheel. And even thought Maxxis says they are designed for a 30mm and up, I haven't ran into any issues with that, and the profile isn't terribly round.
When it comes to performance these blow the Hans Dampf's away in every category. Climbing traction and braking grip is insanely impressive in the rotten Colorado granite I'm on most of the time. Cornering is also noticeably better. I definitely feel more confident with this tire on a tubeless set up. My personal times on my regular trails have also gotten better due to my higher confidence, just recently setting a KOM on Strava (lame, but I'll take what I can get!)
I definitely recommend the Maxxis Aggressor, and now I see why it's so widely recommended!
