Here at Worldwide Cyclery we would agree that the GX group set is the best bang for your buck group set. Our friend, Cesar has been testing out the GX group set! Check out what they think!
After talking to myself for a while about upgrading my 2013 Giant Trance X 2x10 (Sram X7) to a 1x12 I finally pulled the trigger and went full Eagle after exchanging a few emails with Worldwide Cyclery customer service ( bonus! they are very funny), one of my main question was the dub bottom bracket and the issues I could of encounter with my old BB89 frame… I will talk a little bit about that further down
I have been a Sram guy since a good friend of mine introduced cycling to me in El Paso TX (Chuco town) many years back, It was natural to me to choose Sram over Shimano because of Its reliability and price point, and oh boy! I was not mistaken.
Shipment was fast and well packaged, parts were split and shipped from two different locations I believe with a two-day difference between deliveries (no issues there) once all the boys were received installation was a breeze.
The quality of parts is phenomenal, derailleur GX lunar Max long cage is built like a thank. I already fell twice and let me tell you that thing is solid. Crankset arms are also beefy, well built, and strong, new chainring design is clean cool looking, and will maintain the chain in place if you are into the oblong chainring bandwagon because you think you can climb faster well you can upgrade it very easily later on. The shifter, chain and cassette also look well built and all parts are working flawlessly together with zero issues!
I personally installed all the parts, one of my deciding purchase factors was that Eagle GX works out of the box with a regular 10 speed HG hub if you buy the NX PG-1230 12 speed cassette (yes the one that looks like a dinner plate) so no need to upgrade your wheel’s hub to the newer XD driver body.
Again all parts were installed in a breeze except for the bottom bracket, it is nobody's fault that my bike’s BB frame from 2013 was kind of unique, I had originally a Press-fit GXP but when I removed it the dub was bigger in diameter and I could not pass it through from the driver's side so I had two options 1. Remove the sealed bearings from the dub bottom bracket plastic sleeve and press them directly into frame 2. Cut with a handsaw my precious brand new dub BB in half so I can gain the clearance I needed since I like crazy I Took a chance with option 2 proceeded to install half left & half right sides then press them together, so far is working like a charm.
I definitely made an excellent choice and im very happy ( my wife is not) with my new 1X12 Eagle GX groupset. Overall Its a tad lighter than my old 2x10, Im pretty much climbing with the same effort as I did before, the real benefits for me are that I have a solid group set, perfect quality parts at a reasonable price point, fewer moving parts (front derailleur is bye-bye) and now I can just focus on my rear derailleur & dropper post…I highly recommend Sram’s Eagle GX group set you won't be sorry for giving your old iron horse a new life ..Cheers !!
