It's an understatement to say that coil shocks are gaining popularity. One company that stands out above the rest when it comes to coils is Push with their ElevenSix shock. Our friend, Larry, Has been testing it out. See what they think!
I began a frame-up build of a Yeti Sb130 that has seen a few iterations since I completed it in about December of 2020. Typically I will sell a bike about every year and a half to take advantage of new geos or improved suspension setups, however, from the get-go I felt like I’d found something very special with the Yeti. It was just a great fit for me all around and was an excellent complement to my style of riding. Efficient, dialed in on sizing, ready for whatever trail I was riding. It wasn’t perfect for every trail but it is very capable everywhere.
As the pandemic fueled bike industry shortage continued as well as the “new bike” honeymoon phase not ending, I decided to try out a few pieces to really max the performance of the bike. Originally the bike came equipped with a Fox DPX2. The shock was fine. There always seemed to be a noticeable performance trade-off when trying to find more support or better small bump or square-edge compliance. It didn’t offer a lot in the way of tuning or customization and I got to a place where I wanted more than its limited tuning offered.
I fitted a Rockshox Super Deluxe coil and eventually ended up with a nicely dialed setup with an MRP progressive coil. This setup remained for almost a year with solid performance. Turn the clock forward about a year and a half and I have no interest in swapping to a new or different frame as I still enjoy the bike so much. I’ve always had my eye on the Push 11-6 but just never felt like I could justify the cost for a bike that I might sell a year later. The industry being as it is with availability and again my stoke level with the Yeti helped push me over the edge to move forward with maxing out the bike on hand.
Ordering the Push 11-6 was straightforward. There was some communication back and forth with Push to confirm some details and about 4 weeks later, my shock arrived. As much as performance,
I also truly appreciate the aesthetic of something that is beautifully made.
The 11-6 is one of those pieces that just holding and looking over you feel like every detail and piece was carefully considered. All hardware comes preinstalled so installation couldn’t have been simpler. I was very happy with the Super Deluxe but the 11-6 was an improvement in every way. Traction and tracking, the wheel's ability to just get out of the way on square edges, the support, efficiency, quickness to return to height without bucking, everything was just in control and improved. It almost feels like cheating how much you can get away with! After a few rides, I decided to dig into the settings just a little. Push puts out a guide for each frame model with recommended settings that are spot on. I landed on their settings within a single click and couldn’t be happier. So far I can’t find anything negative to say other than its pricey. I could say it weighs more than the original air shock, however, the bike rides better in every way so the small weight difference is not holding me back.
Yes, I’m a believer. Yes, it is a very expensive and custom piece but if you have the means, I can’t recommend it enough. With limited bike availability and bikes being so dialed in the past couple of years, why not max your current build. Old things are new with a few pieces.
