OneUp Components New EDC Threadless Carrier

Words by: Reamonn Ryan

OneUp Components has been challenging innovation in the mountain bike industry since they started a few years ago. We have seen countless items coming from the brand with many competitor brands struggling to keep up with OneUp's innovations. Another year only means another batch of awesome products for us to drool over and that is what we have here today.

One of our favorite innovations is their EDC line. A minimalistic approach to storing essential tools and items on your bike instead of in your pockets or bags. With the introduction of the threaded EDC Top Cap, we saw a huge increase in interest from riders of all skill levels. The only down fall was having to tap (thread) your steerer tube to install it. This works perfectly fine but for most people, taping your steerer tube is above their mechanical skill level. Fast forward a few years and OneUp releases the EDC Lite Top Cap, a composite steerer tube tool holder that utilizes your existing star nut at a mere $40 USD (see review here) This proved to be a very popular item at a cheaper cost, easy install and multiple color options. Now, we have the EDC Threadless Carrier which might as well be my favorite option from OneUp to date.

The EDC Threadless Carrier is designed to utilize the most amount of space possible without having to do any extra work setting in a star nut or taping your steerer. Assembly realistically takes you 10-15 minutes at most, which leaves you ready to hit the trails sooner (scroll down for the installation instructions). The EDC Threadless Carrier is machined from one piece of aluminum and is offered in a variety of colors from the standard anodized red, blue, orange, purple, green and black colors we usually see from most companies. Additionally, they are offering a unique bronze color, and of course, an oil slick option to keep your rig looking as spicy as a chili pepper.

Initial Thoughts:

As soon as I saw this product, I knew it would be an essential upgrade to almost any bike. Having the option to have one less item in my pocket on any ride quickly became something I longed for riding a bike without a tool carrier installed. Having to constantly adjust little things on the bike, I find myself digging through my stuffed pockets quite often and after installing the EDC Threadless Carrier, having the my multitool front and center was such a great feeling. I understand not everyone uses their multitool or bacon strips as often but I do believe that having it right there, ready to go beats fiddling around with straps, bags, and stuffed pockets.

Will the EDC Threadless Carrier Work on Your bike?

It will work on most suspension forks, however, there is a chance it will not work on your bike. Your steerer tube will need to have a length between 185mm and 265mm and if you are running a Rockshox Fork, you will need to have between 210mm to 265mm. The Threadless Carrier will also not be compatible with Fox’s new 38 fork due to the elliptical steerer tube. Along with the 38, the 2012-15 Fox 34, Giant Overdrive 2, and Cannondale Lefty Forks will not be compatible. We highly recommend measuring your fork’s steerer tube before purchasing the OneUp EDC Threadless Carrier to avoid the hassle of installing a product that won’t work for your set up and dealing with a return!

Pros

  • Easy install, 10-15 minutes max.
  • Decent amount of storage; holds multitool, bacon strips, and small items like cash.
  • Looks great, doesn’t look out of place.
  • Light weight, doubtfully noticeable on any bike.
  • Tons of color options, will match most bikes.
  • Carrier alone is an affordable $40 (tool kit is extra)

Cons

  • Doesn’t work with the V1 EDC Tool. You are out of luck if you already have the original EDC Set up.
  • Limited fork compatibility. Will not work with the Fox 38, 2012-2015 Fox 34, All Giant Overdrive 2 Forks, and All Cannondale Lefty Forks.

Installation:

Don’t worry, it doesn’t take a master mechanic to install one of these bad boys. As long as you know how to hold a hammer, a hex wrench, and can turn a wrench, you can do this. Let’s start off by gathering all the required items to make this as easy as possible:

You will need

  • 1x OneUp Components EDC Tool V2 *this is the black multitool (The V1, or green tool, will not fit properly in the threadless carrier)
  • 1x OneUp Components EDC Threadless Carrier (in the color of your choice)
  • 1x Socket extension of punch to remove your existing starnut
  • 1x Hammer to smash things with
  • 1x 4mm hex wrench
  • 1x Ruler or tape measure
  • 1x Eye Protection
  • 1x Frosty beverage of your choice

Step 1

Start off by removing your existing top cap and bolt. We are going to be removing the starnut. The easiest way is to beat it out of your fork. I personally take a more barbaric approach with a hammer and punch. Placing a socket (15mm) and extension over the star nut, you can beat it down with a hammer. Eventually, the starnut will slide out the bottom of the steerer tube and fall to floor. You are now left with an open steerer that is ready to accept your carrier…

Step 2

Grab your Threadless Carrier and slide it into the steerer tube. Don’t laugh, this is serious business. Once it is all the way in, look at the bottom of your steerer. If the threadless carrier extends out of the bottom at all, your steerer is too short. Depending on how much, you can add another spacer on top of your stem to help fitment.

Step 3

Grab your black flying saucer and insert the appropriate threaded bolt for your steerer. Tighten that bad boy on. Since we never loosen the stem bolts, your headset should still be tight but now would be the time to check and make sure that neither your headset or threadless carrier has any movement of wiggle room.

Step 4

We are going to install the EDC Tool V2. Again, the original green V1 tool will not work, you need the black one. Start by taking off the larger storage pod, this will also not fit in the carrier. You will also need to remove the rubber o-ring from the bottom of the tool kit for proper fitment inside the EDC Threadless Carrier. Feel free to install a bacon strip poker or other small items into the storage pod and then install the tool into your carrier.

Step 5

Go ride your bike and enjoy the day!

Conclusion:

“Do you really need it? I would say yes. Unless you are needing to utilize your steerer for something else like a brake line, why not take advantage of the space to carry a tool kit and other small items? You never know when you are going to need a multi tool and having one right there can save you a lot of time trying to find your multi tool that’s just free floating in your pack or pockets that is more likely that not already packed with a ton of other items. It also gives you the option to be prepared for your ride without having to think about it since the tool will be living on your bike. I give the EDC Threadless carrier a 10/10 for its easy install and convenience. I would much rather be running this than over filling a frame strap or pack.” - Reamonn
