If you are the type of rider that enjoys chunky, loose, and fast trails then a chain guide should be high on your list. OneUp Components make some of the best chain guides in the MTB industry and in this review, our customer Michael puts his to the test. Check out his review to hear his thoughts!
This bash guard is nearly indestructible! I had only used MRP before and had not had any issues, but this one came highly recommended from my bike brand customer service department (Marin Rift Zone 3). First of all, it was extremely easy to install. I did not even need to pull the cranks. I just popped the quick-link on my chain, dropped if off the chain-ring, figured out the right number of shims for the chain guide, bolted it on, and reinstalled the chain. Okay, it wasn’t exactly that simple, but it wasn’t difficult at all. I love that it came with different size bash guards!! I honestly had no idea it did until it arrived and I opened the package. This is way lighter than my old MRP as well. It was actually three grams lighter than advertised. I am guessing that is due to the number of shims I am using. It looks absolutely stunning on my black and orange bike.
Now for the fun part! I took the OneUp Components chainguide and bashguard out to Asheville, NC for its first test, and my bike’s first test for that matter.
I knocked this thing off stumps, logs, big round rocks, and a bunch of sharp edges over the week of riding and it barely shows a blemish on the guard.
I cannot say that for my MRP I had last. I broke that thing twice! Of course, I was a much less skilled rider a few years ago though. Even still, this thing is great and I feel much more confident bombing through jagged rock gardens with this thing mounted up! I run a 30-tooth chainring on trips to the mountains and a 34 tooth chainring around home where it is flatter than a crackhead’s behind. The smaller bash guard fits the 30-tooth perfectly and the middle size works perfect for the 34-tooth. The larger looks like it would do the same for a 36-tooth chainring as well. I definitely love that I do not have to run the chain guide if I do not want to and the same goes for the bash guard. Either can be removed and the other left on. I did not have great luck with OneUp chainrings in the past, but this thing is literally perfect. It’s also cheaper than the MRP by twenty bucks, which is honestly why I chose it instead. Boy, am I glad I did! This thing looks better and the bash guard is better in my opinion.
A chain guide is a chain guide in my opinion, but this one seems to be doing its job just fine. I do like that the inside of the guide is angled so it works better with the wide gear ranges of the 11-12 speed drivetrains without rubbing. Either way you look at it, OneUp did it right with this product. Way to go guys, and thanks to Worldwide Cyclery for hooking me up!
