Arguably some of the best tires in mountain biking, the Minion DHF and DHR II tires also have to be the most popular. They're so versatile for all types of riding and trail conditions. From trail to enduro, you can't really go wrong. Fellow rider, Steve Williams, recently put some new rubber on his trusty steed and gives us his review. Check it out and remember to keep the rubber side down!
I recently got myself these tires from Worldwide Cyclery:
Maxxis Minion DHR II Tire - 27.5 x 2.8, Folding, Tubeless, Black, 3C Maxx Terra, EXO
Maxxis Minion DHF Tire - 27.5 x 2.8, Folding, Tubeless, Black, 3C Maxx Terra, EXO
I got these because I learned a big lesson from last year. That lesson being that living in the PNW in the winter means lots of rain and mud with some mixed in snow. If you want to keep riding all winter it helps to have the right tires.
Winter isn't here quite yet but I've definitely been able to test these tires out in a few good rainstorms. What a difference a good tire makes in the mud.
Technically these tires are a bit big for my bike being 2.8's. They barely fit. You can tell there is a bit more rolling resistance than my old 2.3's but that's to be expected. Honestly, the mud gives more rolling resistance than the tires. These things have given me traction where I probably shouldn't have had it. On steep tight muddy berms that would have left my old tires caked, and me in the ditch, these things shed the mud and keep me stuck to the ground.
With the 3C Maxx Terra EXO casings, I have no problems ramming them into rocks and roots. I don't have to worry about a puncture and they give me confidence if I make a mistake. I am quite sure these tires will save my butt's poor riding skills and will keep me moving on the trail through just about anything. Mud has been tested. Snow is next! Plus they are so huge they make my bike look awesome.
I'm looking forward to winter and really putting these things to the test. Bring it on winter!
PS. Along with these, I got some Stans NoTubes Tubeless Tire Sealant for the install. Love this stuff! Hasn't let me down yet!
