This review follows my previous review of the Kuat Sherpa 2.0 Hitch Rack. In that review, I said that the Kuat Pivot would really top off the whole system and here we are months later. I ended up getting the Kuat Pivot a few weeks after that review went live and have been using it every day, ever since. This blog is more of a long term review since I have had so much time with the product.
Installation was super easy! As you could imagine it simply slid right into the hitch and with a special locking pin and bolt it has not moved since the original installation. My Kuat Sherpa 2.0 Rack fit right into place on the other end of the pivot and is held into place by the original pin and lock.
One concern I had with the Pivot was the excessive amount weight from multiple bikes, my friends messing around or even hanging gear from the rack and the effect it would have on the alignment from the top and bottom parts of the Pivot. After about 5 months of extensive use and many trips up and down the coast of California, I am pleased to say that everything is still as straight as the day it was installed.
The Pivot swings completely out of the way when needing to access the rear of my car. The Pivot itself provides an extra 7-inches or so of room off the back of my car so it gives me enough room to see the curb from my backup camera. That was the biggest issue I had when I was not using the Kuat Pivot. Swinging the bikes out of the way makes it easier to get ready before the ride, pack up after, and even just access everything in the rear of the car when stopping off at the store or a restraint. It is also a Safe way to not leave your bike laying on the ground blocking other cars and can even prevent your bike from getting ran over… One of our Warehouse Processors, Brady, learned this the hard way.
My only complaints would have to one, be the weight which is hard to complain about since it is such a durable piece of equipment. The second complaint would have to be the length of the Bolt from the Pivot itself. It scrapes on a few driveways or dips in the road but this could be avoided with a slightly higher vehicle.
One advantage is that the paint held up to a bunch of flame retardant from our recent brush fires. The entire device has stayed true and still feels brand new. The latch and alignment pin has held up just fine with no slippage or fault.
I highly recommend the Kuat Pivot to anyone who is looking to find an easier solution to access the back of their vehicle. This product would really help those living the van life who often have issues with the rear doors. My favorite part of using this Kuat Pivot is that fact that I don’t need to take the bikes off the rack to take out all my camping equipment or use my front seats to gear up before a ride. The thing lives on my car and it probably will remain there until the car is gone.
