When mountain bikers hear Chromag, hard riding in BC Canada and durable components comes to mind. Chromag is known for they very high-end and durable components that withstand the BC terrain we all love. Our customer is running their Phase30 wheels. See what they think of them!
I have been running the chromag BA rims as a rear wheel and phase 30 up front for some time. They are the best rims without going carbon in my opinion. They hold up for a long time and can withstand abuse all while not breaking the bank. Chromag really did a great job with these rims and I highly recommend them to anyone on the fence.
That being said, when I wanted upgrade my Chromag Stylus hard tail to a mullet set up, I needed a 29er wheel. I normally buy Onyx hubs and build up my wheels but because it was a front hub, I figured I wouldn’t know any difference if I bought a complete wheel this time. It saved me a bit of time and the wheel build was done to perfection. Perfectly straight and was well protected during shipping without any scuffs or damage. I received the wheel with tubeless tape already installed so it was as easy as popping a tire on the wheel to go out riding. Really happy I did not decide to build up another wheel as it’s not my favorite process and honestly I don’t think my builds could compare to the quality of this wheel.
The hub itself seems bomb proof and I have literally not had any issues. I’d assume it’s just a couple of bearings since it only a front wheel. It’s worth noting that I would not have purchased a complete rear wheel from Chromag. Their hubs don’t have a very high engagement although I am confident the hub would last a long time.
As for ride feel, I truly don’t believe you can get a better alloy wheel. I’m not much of a weight weenie and always opt for parts that will last rather than saving on weight. If that is you, don’t hesitate to buy these wheels.
They really can withstand a beating and are very compliant through corners.
I still have yet to adjust a spoke and I probably have about 80 miles on the wheel.
A note about my riding style: I definitely am more interested in technical trails over jump trails. I want a wheel I can really beat on without having to worry about it breaking catastrophically or becoming out of alignment. Another important thing is that I run cushcore and without it, my wheels would take much more abuse. I have geniunely taken some hard impacts and was shocked at how well the rim does. It relatively difficult to pinch flat and even when you do take enough of an impact to loosen some spokes, I am able to tighten them back up and rim still has life
Overall, I really cannot say enough good things about this wheel and Chromag in general. I love their bikes, stems, handlebars, clothing and whatever else they make. It’s always a quality product and would recommend them to anyone. I currently own 2 bikes and both bikes, I have a phase 30/ ba 30 combo. I like have the BA 30 in the back as it is a touch more durable although I am confident I would be fine riding even a Phase 30. If you are on the fence about this product, don’t be and buy it!
