The threadless headset was a major innovation in bikes when Cane Creek first released it in the early 90s. It is something that has allowed for innovation in frames and forks over the years. Check below out what our friend Mark has to say about his new headset from Cane Creek.
If you’re really into mountain biking and looking for a new challenge you should take on the task of building up a bike from a bare frame. You choose all the parts so the end result is totally custom. You install all the parts so your wrench skills improve.
One part, which while essential often gets overlooked is the headset. The headset is a set of bearings installed into the headtube that keeps your steering smooth. There are so many different headset specifications that selecting the right one for your frame can be confusing. That’s where Cane Creek can help out. Their website has a headset finder which makes it much easier to spec the correct headset.
I purchased a Cane Creek 40 series headset for my build. The frame required cups to be installed into the headtube. The installation was a little sketchy but nothing a little tapping with a hammer couldn’t fix. I have tried to do all the work on my build myself but in hindsight installing headset cups is one job I might go to a bike shop for. Bike shop mechanics have the experience and very specialized tools to do the job right.
I have Cane Creek headsets on all of my bikes and look forward to many years of smooth trouble-free operation from their products
