A recent trend in the mountain bike community is shorter cranks. Not only do the shorter cranks help prevent pedal strikes, they also help with a better stance on the bike, and for some it helps with bike fit issues. We have a customer that threw on 155mm 5Dev cranks. See what they think about the cranks!

Overview

Finally, I was able to purchase a set of 5 DEV 155mm “dub” cranks! Prior to these cranks, my bikes were equipped with 170mm cranks and being 5'6" (169cm), 135lbs, 29" inseam and mostly size “small” in my bike frame and apparel, I found myself constantly having knee and back aches along with the dreaded "thud" of hitting pedals on rocks, especially on technical climbs.

Now, after years of watching YouTube bike build videos, I got the courage to build my 1st hardtail, an Ibis DV9. The DV9 uses a 55mm chain line so after doing some research, I discovered that these 52mm "boost" 5 DEV cranks will fit as long as I use a 0mm offset chainring and a 2 mm dub spacer on the drive side.

Initially, my first ride with these 155 mm cranks were a bit awkward but after 20 minutes of riding and a saddle adjustment, I found it to be smooth and efficient on climbs and less strenuous on my knees and back. My ride times were neither faster or slower with these cranks but noticeably more comfortable. I will also add that installing my Race Face Atlas pedals were easy compared to my SRAM X01 carbon cranks as I always feared I was going to cross thread the pedals.

Final Thougths

In summation, 5 DEV cranks are not cheap but despite this, being able to fit a shorter 155mm “dub” crank provides way more comfort and less pain on my knees even when my saddle is lowered. A bonus is that these cranks are stylish, made in California and light weight. Another bonus is that I got a great deal at Worldwide Cyclery!
