As big fans of Crank Brothers, many of us at the shop regularly run Mallet E pedals on our trail bikes, so we were excited when we found out that the Mallet Trail Pedal were coming out. We have tried many different clip-less pedals in the past, from Shimano's tried and true SPD platform to Times newer Speciale system, and we were curious to see how the Mallet Trail would perform in comparison. One thing for certain is that the consistency of the eggbeater system from Crank Brothers shines through across their whole lineup!
First of all, I was impressed by the versatility of these pedals. As the brand claims, the Mallet Trail fills the gap between their Candy and Mallet E pedals, and I think this is a good position for it to be in. The optimized platform size and surface are perfect for trail, gravel, and “down country” xc riding making it an ideal choice for those who like to mix up their riding styles.
These pedals look amazing. The finish is high quality and durable, with a nice cnc finish on the inner edges of the pedal platform. The pedals come in the colors Champagne, Purple and Black. All three are sure to fit the look that you might be after on your bike! They are the perfect size to keep the weight down on your bike but to also add stability to any endurance bike.
One of the standout features of the Mallet Trail is the long spindle and 57mm q-factor, which helps with the bike stability and speed as well as gives the shoe more clearance from the crank arm. Additionally, the Mallet Trail comes equipped with integrated traction pad technology, which allows for customization and optimization of the shoe/pedal interface. This is a great feature for riders who are looking for added grip and control.
The Mallet Trail also has two adjustable pins per side. These front pins may not always be in contact with your shoe whilst clipped in, but in the chance you unclip while riding, the support these pins provide help keep your foot in place. The 4-sided entry and superior mud shedding provide customizable float and release angles, making it easier to get in and out of the pedals in any condition.
Finally, the premium bearings, double seal system and a hex alloy endcap provide added durability and reliability to the pedals. With a 5-year warranty, I think this is a solid choice for riders who are looking for a reliable and versatile clip-less pedal for their next adventure.
Overall, I think the Mallet Trail clip-less pedals from Crank Brothers are a great addition to their range of pedals. With features designed to enhance stability, speed, and control, these pedals are ideal for trail and gravel riding. They nailed every aspect from the Mallet E and Mallet DH line, without the bulk and weight that comes with more aggressive pedals like those. The customizable float and release angles, integrated traction pad technology, and adjustable pins per side make this pedal a great choice for riders of all levels who are looking for a reliable and versatile clip-less pedal.
