We would like to introduce the new Race Face Turbine R wheelset featuring the Vault hub. This is the first Race Face branded hub and is built completely from the ground up. When they set out to design the Vault hub, Race Face wanted to make the best hub on the market that would well represent the brand and the high quality products that they are known for.
When it came to designing the Vault hub, Race Face wanted to go with the over-sized shell to provide more area for performance advantages which include increased rear drive torsional stiffness by up to 20% and much increased lateral stiffness. Getting great engagement was also high on the priority list during designing the Vault. Having ridden wheels with high engagement, we can say that his is a HUGE plus when it comes to pedaling power and efficiency.
The hub is loaded with a 60 tooth drive ring with two sets of three pawls that are offset from each other which gives these six pawls that have two teeth per pawl and 3-degree engagement which results in instant power when you need it most. Each pawl also features a low drag spring which helps keep positive engagement while still keeping low coasting drag.
Hub Features:
Race Face opted for the 6902 bearings since they have a larger ball diameter resulting in better durability. They went with a wider bearing placement to lessen the stress on the bearings, thus increasing lifespan. To make sure these hubs are extremely durable and to try and keep service intervals down, Race Face designed low-drag labyrinth seals specifically for the Vault hub.
In building the Turbine R wheelset, Race Face kept compatibility in mind and made it so that you can do tool-free end cap swaps to work with current spacing such as 12x142 and quick release, but a separate hub for the emerging 12x148 boost spacing. Boost adds distance in the center of the hub between the drive-side and non-driveside spoke angles for a wider bracing angle as well as improved wheel stiffness.
The Race Face Turbine R rim is constructed with a lightweight 6069 aluminum which is 40% stronger than the 6061 standard. The stronger alloy allowed Race Face to thin out any unnecessary material to produce a 27.5 rim with an internal width of 30mm that weighs only 460g. Race Face tested these wheels exclusively with the Devinci Global Racing team which helped them decide on the 30mm rim width. This will cover all the bases whether you ride all-mountain or like to shred enduro. Lastly, these wheels come dialed in tubeless ready with tape and valves already installed out of the box. These are definitely epic wheels that shouldn’t be overlooked when shopping around for wheels.
